Hybrid | Washington, DC Metro Area

Compensation: $65–$75/hour

About the Opportunity

Our client, a well-established and mission-driven nonprofit organization with annual revenues exceeding $40 million, is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join its finance leadership team. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact while supporting a complex nonprofit accounting environment.

The Assistant Controller will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, audits, and internal controls. This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional with strong nonprofit accounting experience and a collaborative leadership style.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee general ledger activity, account reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Support the annual audit and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory reporting.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Monitor and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff while promoting process improvements.
  • Support financial reporting to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial data and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Required experience working for a nonprofit organization with annual revenues of $40 million or greater.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, fund accounting, and grant compliance.
  • Experience managing audits and preparing financial statements.
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting/ERP systems.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with federally funded grants and contracts.
  • Prior experience in a multi-entity or complex nonprofit environment.
  • Background overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
