Accounting Manager / Assistant Controller (Consulting)
Engagement Type: Contract
Location: Hybrid – 2 days per week onsite in Washington, DC
Compensation: $60–$65/hour

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager or Assistant Controller–level consultant to support and stabilize core accounting operations during a critical period of improvement. This is a hands‑on leadership role focused on month‑end close, audit support, grants accounting, and process documentation.
This opportunity is ideal for a seasoned accounting professional who enjoys stepping into dynamic environments, addressing backlogs, improving processes, and delivering results within a defined engagement.

Key Responsibilities
Month‑End Close & Core Accounting
  • Manage and execute the monthly close process
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, and recurring entries
  • Complete and reconcile bank accounts
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting
Audit, Tax & Compliance
  • Support audit finalization and coordinate with external auditors
  • Assist with preparation and review of Form 990 filings
  • Prepare audit schedules, documentation, and supporting analysis
Grants & Cost Allocations (Nice to Have)
  • Prepare and manage monthly cost allocations, including indirect costs
  • Allocate expenses in compliance with grant and regulatory requirements
  • Support both federal and non‑federal grant reporting
Investments & External Accounting
  • Record investment activity and calculate gains/losses
  • Obtain and reconcile investment statements
Payroll & Accounts Payable Support
  • Assist with bi‑weekly payroll processing via ADP Workforce Now
  • Support expense reporting and accounts payable through Concur
  • Coordinate payroll and AP entries as part of month‑end close
Process Improvement & Documentation
  • Document accounting policies and procedures
  • Identify gaps and formalize consistent workflows
  • Recommend and implement process improvements and controls
Special Projects
  • Support cleanup initiatives, system enhancements, and ad hoc accounting projects as needed

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong hands‑on experience with:
    • Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) – required
    • ADP Workforce Now
    • Concur
  • Solid background in month‑end close, reconciliations, and audit support
  • Experience with grant accounting and cost allocations is a plus
  • Comfortable working in environments requiring cleanup and process formalization
  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and able to manage competing priorities
